A rural sacrifice takes place in the middle of the second register of the floor mosaic
Some characters are depicted in front of a statue of
Diana
, the goddess of hunting. One of them, evidently of high rank due to the details of his purple clothing adorned by
stripes
and
orbs
, offers the deity incense or resin in the brazier of a quadrangular altar; a ritual to gain favour for the hunting activity about to begin. At his side, two young men watch the scene, leading a horse by the reins, while a boy holds a dog at bay. Scenes of rural sacrifice were frequent for the decoration of many private residences.
