Marble sarcophagus takes its name from the wife of Count Valerius, a high-ranking official of the imperial court, depicted with her husband in a shell in the centre of the sarcophagus.
The couple is also mentioned by an epigraph engraved on the lid: “Here lies Adelphia C.F., spouse of Count Valerius.”, whereby “C.F.” is an honorific abbreviation for high-ranking women.
The sarcophagus has thirteen decorations of Christian iconography arranged on a double band on the case: most of them are taken from the New Testament while the rest are Old Testament citations.
The most important element of the sarcophagus is its exquisite decorations, including the scene of the Nativity of Jesus, considered “the oldest manger scene in the world”.
