A journey to Pantalica

Pantalica and air. The skies of Pantalica: from hawks to bats

The sound of the river flowing accompanies human footsteps along the paths of Pantalica, while peregrine falcons and buzzards soar above the peaks of the necropolis. The birds are the guardians of this sacred place and observe its visitors from afar. Among the numerous birds that populate the skies, you can also spot eagles and hoopoes, whitethroated dippers and a few examples of common kingfishers . Meanwhile, near the northern necropolis, you will find the famous Grotta dei Pipistrelli (Bat Cave). It is the largest natural cave in Pantalica. Those who enter find themselves in a dark, damp and silent place!
Grotta dei PipistrelliIts silence is interrupted only by large drops of water falling from the stalactites and forming small puddles on the ground, and above all, by the noise of the bats, whose disorderly flight imitates the rustling of the wind.
