The Renaissance was a period of artistic and cultural rebirth that developed, especially in the city of Florence, from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Modern Age, i.e. from the mid-14th century to the 16th century. The Renaissance is about change and breaking away from the beliefs of the past. The Renaissance man felt he was at the centre of the world and capable of knowing and mastering the phenomena of nature, partly thanks to the recovery of the classics from ancient Greece and Rome. In the field of art and architecture, the ideals of the Renaissance are linked to proportions, harmony and purity of form, so much so that the artist Ghiberti wrote that “proportionality alone creates beauty”.
