columns

The Monreale Cathedral’s longitudinal body is divided on each side by nine columns with uniform monolithic shafts which are all the same height, except for the two entrance columns, which are slightly smaller, and the second column on the right. The eighteen columns are made of reddish-grey granite, while the first column to the right of the entrance is made of grey cipollino marble with green streaks, perhaps because it has been reworked and modified with respect to the original design. These differences between the eighteen columns are standardised, also visually, by the size of the plinths and pulvinos, although the colonnade was certainly originally more homogeneous than it is today. All the columns rest on 134cm square plinths and are connected by 9cm square plinths.
