Sicilian architect and town planner, Angelo Italia was born in Licata in 1628. He began working as a bricklayer and contractor with his father Francesco and then learned the basics of architecture at specialised construction sites. Among his work, the Church of San Angelo, where his artistic debut took place, the mother Church of Palma di Montechiaro and the Church of San Francesco Saverio are notable. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1671 and designed the church of Sant’Ignazio in Mazzara del Vallo. In 1639, he was sent to Catania, after the earthquake, for the reconstruction of the Jesuit complex. He died in Palermo on 5 May 1700.
