The baptismal font, found in churches and baptisteries, is the basin containing the water for baptism, the moment in which one is reborn to new life, according to Christian religion. The Palatine Chapel’s baptismal font is located in the left aisle, in the space of the narthex. The latter is a transverse room next to the façade, reserved for catechumens and penitents. It is located precisely between the façade of the church and the nave and is as wide as the building itself. Raised on a marble slab, the fountain consists of a base with a border decorated with inlays, a richly decorated rectangular support with four porphyry side columns and, finally, the basin.
