To officiate at the liturgy, the priest uses various sacred objects that echo the symbolism of the bread and wine that Jesus used during the Last Supper.
The symbolic chalice is the vessel the wine is poured into to become the Blood of Christ.. There are also the small glass ampoules that contain the water and wine ready to be poured into the chalice; the paten, i.e. the saucer in which the Holy Host is poured; the pyx, a cup with a lid that holds the pieces; the corporal, i.e. the tablecloth that covers the altar and the purification table. The latter is a small linen handkerchief with an embroidered cross in the centre, used to dry sacred objects after communion ceremonies.
