Welcome to Agrigentum

Introduction to the path

The course reconstructs the fate of Agrigentum, which continues the pomp of ancient Akragas in the first Roman province, Sicily.
After an introduction to contextualize the historical moment in which plunges the story, places of public life of the city will be explored that stood near the old hole: the life of the policy areas, such as ekklesiasterion and bouleuterion, to those of religious life, like the Hellenistic-Roman sanctuary, to the places devoted to leisure activities, theater and gymnasium.
The narrative continues in the Hellenistic-Roman district, a witness of self-representation of the private values of Agrigento that, just in the domus, were a display of precious decorations and rich furnishings. The economic and social well-being in which this population lived, also documented by the discovery of numerous shops and a thermal plant in the residential district, was probably supported by the flourishing trade of sulfur, the main protagonist of the exchanges that took place by sea from the port of Agrigentum.
The tour ends in the Roman necropolis, further proof of the splendor that characterized the lifestyle of Agrigento. In this area, located on the outside of the ancient southern walls of Akragas, you can also admire the lush nature that, for centuries, has been the backdrop to this city.
Each stop on the itinerary is accompanied by suggestions that through the five senses excite the visitor and project it in everyday scenes of Agrigentum from Roman times.
