Bishop Gioacchino Castelli, who governed the diocese of Cefalù from 1755 until his death in 1788, wanted to enrich the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with a silver coating. The work is dated 1764, as an inscription reads “IOAKINUS CASTELLI EPISCOPUS 1764”, and is one of many examples of stylistic renovations and refurbishments, typical of the late Baroque in Sicily, that affected many churches. The piece consists of a silver antependium, with a wooden core, embossed, chiselled and decorated with winged cherubs, as well as the altar and the tabernacle with the image of the Holy Saviour on the door.
