Stylistic transformations have also affected the Cathedrals of Palermo and Catania over the centuries. In Palermo, it was Archbishop Filangeri who entrusted theproject of consolidation and restoration to the royal architect Ferdinando Fuga in 1767. The works that were carried out from 1781 to 1801 were however more invasive than those of the initial project. In Catania, on the other hand, Giovanni Battista Vaccarini was called by Bishop Galletti to carry out works from 1734 to 1761, mainly on the façade. The Cathedral had, in fact, suffered serious damage from the 1693 earthquake.
