The mosaic decorations of the Monreale naves illustrate biblical and evangelical passages that were certainly also referred to during liturgical celebrations, especially when the Holy Scriptures were read. In the nave, there are depictions, on a gold background, of the stories of the Old Testament, from the Creation to the Cycle of Jacob and the New Testament with episodes from the life and miracles of Christ. These episodes are part of the great iconographic programme that tells the story of salvation: from the Expectation of Christ to the Great Pantocrator.
