The representation of the Villae Maritimae (seaside villas) is a recurring and popular theme in the pictorial and mosaic decorations in various Domus of the western Mediterranean. The reproduction of the maritime landscape, which also includes ports and islands, depicts the seaside villas in the foreground, with scenic porticoes open towards the sea.
These buildings, which testify to the diffusion and transformation of an architectural model, were also called villas of leisure, in the sense that the Romans dedicated them to otium, as places of rest and meditation far from the commotion of Rome.
The presence of such depictions inside the rooms of the Villa del Casale represents a repertoire of the various types of buildings, confirming the Villa as a microcosm for the representation of all knowledge.
