The Greek theatre of Akrai is located at the entrance of the archaeological site and can accommodate up to 600 spectators. It is not dug into the rock but lies naturally on the slope. It was modified in Roman times and the space of the orchestra pit, where the choir is usually located, was reduced. It has excellent acoustics and is still used today for shows in the summer months.
One of the main activities organised by the Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico (Italian National Institute of Ancient Drama) is the International Festival of Classical Youth Theatre, during which works by ancient dramatists and playwrights are staged.
