Horse-drawn chariot races were one of the most anticipated events, but also one of the most dangerous.
The charioteers who drove the wagons had to be young, tall and light to manage these vehicles fitted with agile wooden wheels, and avoid slowing them down with their weight.
The race involved twelve laps of the track, and since a total of 60 chariots took part, the wheels would often get stuck together.
The racing chariots would even flip over frequently due to the high speed, or because of structures placed especially on the track to create difficulties for the charioteers and their steeds.
