It is said that Ortigia had a deep connection with a Greek island in the Aegean sea, Delos. Both islands, in fact, in ancient times, had the same name.
The Greek Ortigia then changed its name to Delos, a word that derives from the greek word Deloo: “luminous island”, as the legend tells that there were born the sun god, Apollo and the goddess of the hunt, Artemis.
But we do not know which of the two islands has taken to the first name of “Ortigia”. So there is a certain mystery that makes it even more fascinating origins of this piece of land, surrounded by the sea and steeped in history, which proves to have roots that are lost in time and merge with those of Greek mythology.
