Though the current area of Panarea is the smallest of the archipelago, in reality, if the entire volcanic structure were considered, its size would be quite respectable, comparable with the larger Lipari.
The underwater part in front that surrounds the isle has a maximum depth of 100 metres.
This corresponds to the levelling created by sea erosion, when the sea was at a different level than it is now. At that stage the main structure of Panarea had already collapsed in several places.
