The vestibule constitutes the entrance or antechamber of the Roman house, but over time its location has differed in different kinds of dwellings.
In the domus italica with an atrium and hortus and in the Hellenistic domus, both found in the Republican period, there is a consecutive succession of rooms characterised by vestibule-atrium-tablinum, which is found on the opposite side of the vestibule, after the atrium.
In the Villa Romana del Casale, from the late antiquity period, the vestibule begins the ceremonial sequence of the rooms of the residence. It has an official character and this characteristic is highlighted by the scene that occupies the central part of the floor mosaic.
