In absolute silence, even without seeing ash clouds rising from the bottom of the craters, you can distinctly see some explosions: these are simply gas bubbles exploding inside the volcanic conduit when they are about to reach the surface....
When arriving in this area in a period of eruptions or explosions from the summit craters, you can distinctly hear the explosions every 5-10 minutes....
The high altitude, around 2650 metres, as well as the fact that there are no shelters, means that this area is always very windy, even during summer. Its hum becomes perceptible not only on the skin but in the absolute silence that reigns over the valley....
This is one of the quietest places Sicily has to offer. In fact, the high altitude does not allow for much fauna, so what you hear is just the sound of the wind, often harsh, and the explosions of the nearby north-eastern crater....
The explosions of the central craters in the distance
The Val Calanna and, more generally, the Valle del Bove, are far from inhabited centres. By sitting somewhere comfortable, at some point you will hear an explosion from the summit craters!...
There is nothing more powerful than the stormy sea. At the edge of the timpa, during a storm coming from the east, you can hear the real impetuosity of the sea, so intense that the ground underfoot vibrates, too....
The fish market is where fishermen sell their products to local fishmongers in the early hours of each day. In Aci Trezza, it is located just north of the small harbour. It is worthwhile to go and hear the shouting by all the fisherman to sell as much fish as possible....
