Hall of the private apartment named after the “small hunt”

The rural sacrifice

A rural sacrifice takes place in the middle of the second register of the floor mosaic.
Some characters are depicted in front of a statue of Diana, the goddess of hunting. One of them, evidently of high rank due to the details of his purple clothing adorned by clavi and orbiculi , offers the deity incense or resin in the brazier of a quadrangular altar; a ritual to gain favour for the hunting activity about to begin. At his side, two young men watch the scene, leading a horse by the reins, while a boy holds a dog at bay. At the time, scenes of rural sacrifice also adorned private residences, as shown by a Lillebonne mosaic , formerly Juliobona in Normandy.
